In this edition of Christian Movie Reviews we look at one of the bigger movies of the year- American Gangster.
This movie is extremely graphic and is not exactly what you'd call a Christian movie.
However, it is based on a true story and could be looked at as an almost "documentary" style movie. It does have two of the best actors in Hollywood in Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. If you're a Christian and you're considering watching the movie, I'll let you know what you're getting into.
The movie is based on the story of Frank Lucas and the drug empire that he built. His nemesis is policeman Richie Roberts (Crowe) and they share several similarities throughout the story.
Roberts is known for being the "good guy" in the police force. He once turned in a million dollars that he found on the job. While this is obviously the right thing to do, the other policemen hate him for it. Pretty much everyone else on the force is dirty and they don't get along.
Lucas revolutionizes the heroin game by cutting out the middlemen and going straight to the source in Vietnam. He went against the system and sold drugs at bargain basement prices.
The struggle between these two is an interesting story that has some entertainment value. However, as a Christian, we have to decide what is ok to watch.
In this movie, you'll see some pretty graphic violence. For example, Lucas shoots a guy in the head in front of about 100 people on the street. So look forward to a lot of violence. You'll also find some female nudity from time to time and some sexual content. Is this a family movie? Definitely not. If these things don't bother you, you might watch the movie as a part of American history. Just don't let the kids watch.
