So why do we need salvation anyway? Why does everyone at church talk about "being saved" and salvation? How can I be sure that I'm going to heaven? If these are questions that you don't know the answer to, you're on the right page.
What do we need to be saved from exactly? "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
This piece of Scripture tells us that no one is perfect. We have all messed up and this separates us from God. God is perfect and when we sin, it takes us out of His perfect will.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
This verse tells us that the penalty for sin is death. In this scripture, it is not referring to a physical death, which everyone is subject to. Instead, it is referring to an eternal death. Essentially, it means that we are all destined for the destruction and death of hell unless we change our ways. Hell is not some figurative fairy tale or a curse word that we shout when in disbelief.
It is a real place. In Matthew 13:42 we hear about what happens to those who are destined for this place. "They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Does this sound like an eternity that you would enjoy? Luckily, if you want to avoid this eternal fate, you can take the necessary steps to do so. When you become saved, you are assured of a future in Heaven with God.
Here are the steps you can take to be saved:
1. Admit that you're a sinner and turn from your sin
Before you can come to Jesus, you have to first realize and admit that you're a sinner. Then you have to make the decision to repent from that sin. You must experience the moment that you turned away from your sinful life. This doesn't mean that you'll never sin again, only that you try to turn from it.
2. Believe that Jesus died for you to save you from your sin
After you admit that you're a sinner, you must believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died for you.
3. Come by faith
John 14:6 Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."
This means that you have to turn to Jesus to be saved. He is the only way.
4. Pray to God
At this time, you need to pray to God and ask him to save you. Here is an example of a sinner's prayer that you can use, but you don't have to use this exact phrasing.
Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I do not deserve eternal life. But, I believe You died and rose from the grave to make me a new creation and to prepare me to dwell in your presence forever. Jesus, come into my life, take control of my life, forgive my sins and save me. I am now placing my trust in You alone for my salvation and I accept your free gift of eternal life.
5. Believe and do not doubt that you're saved!
You didn't do anything to save yourself and once you have been saved, you are on your way to Heaven.
Ephesians 2:8 says: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."
6. Confess Your Decision
Romans 10:9-10 says, "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."
After you are saved, you must confess this decision to others. Confess this to someone else...a pastor, a friend or someone from church.
7. Be baptized
Once you are saved, the first thing you should do is be baptized. In the Bible, when people were saved, they immediately got baptized to show that they are a follower of Christ. This is symbolic of dying with Jesus and being raised from the dead. Sin is now dead to you and has no power over you. Instead, you are now part of the Kingdom of God.
Jesus commanded: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19
If you just went through those steps and prayed the prayer, congratulations! You now have the gift of salvation and you can be assured that you are going to Heaven some day.
Once you have salvation, this is merely the beginning of your journey with God.
Go to a local church and get connected with other believers. Your walk will be much more enjoyable if you have other believers to share it with. Study God's word daily. Pray constantly.
