The Secret vs Christianity

Everyone in this day and age wants to pit The Secret vs Christianity. It's almost like they want to put the two sides in a no-holds-barred cagematch and let them fight to the death.

Many people want to know...who's side are you on in The Secret vs Christianity.

The truth is, I'm on both. What?!?! How dare you ride the fence on this terrible issue that is tearing apart the church as we know it! (In my best church-lady voice)

I don't really see it as riding the fence in the battle of The Secret vs Christianity. I think they compliment each other perfectly. In fact The Secret (law of attraction) is just one of the many concepts in the Bible.

No they don't call it the law of attraction in the Bible, so stop flipping to the index of your King James version just yet.

However, references of this beautiful law are scattered throughout the Good Book.

Let's look at Romans 12:2.

Paul said, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will."

What is Paul trying to tell us here?

He tells us to not conform to the pattern of this world. How does this apply to the law of attraction?

Probably the most amazing book on the principles of the law of attraction is "The Science of Getting Rich". In it, Wallace D. Wattles says, "To think what you want to think is to think truth regardless of appearances...To think truth regardless of appearances is laborious and requires the expenditure of more power than any other task you have to perform."

See the correlation?

Paul tells us not to think of the physical surroundings, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Wattles said to think truth regardless of what the outside appearances are telling you.

Both men knew the importance of thinking what you wanted in order to become something greater. Both knew of this beautiful law of attraction regardless of how they referred to it.

Belief is the key in all of this. You can be skeptical and say it doesn't work all you want. In your case, you're exactly right. It doesn't.

Jesus said, "All of the promises are for those who believe."

Napoleon Hill said, "Whatever the mind can concieve and believe, it can achieve."

So where does all of the tension come from in the battle of The Secret vs Christianity?

Personally I believe it comes from the fundamental difference in how people see "prayer". Most Christians were taught that prayer meant talking to God with words. There is nothing wrong with spoken prayer. It helps to organize your thoughts.

The Secret teaches that you must hold in your mind what you desire and be thankful as if you've already received it. Christians might argue that you have to pray to God for that which you desire.

I'm here to propose that both sides are doing the exact same thing. Prayer is holding the thought in your mind. In order for the law of attraction to work, you must "pray". It's just not what most Christians are used to.

Mark 11:24 says, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

That verse sounds amazingly like the theme of the secret. Ask, believe, and receive.

How is this any different than holding the vision of what you want, thanking God for it, and then expecting to receive it? Don't let your definition of what prayer is throw you off from the truth.

I'm here to propose that The Secret vs Christianity is not an issue. The creators of The Secret are not trying to create some new religion that solves all of your problems. They're simply repackaging an age-old truth.

Hopefully this has opened your mind just a little. Think about the above observations. Don't let your fundamentalist beliefs get in the way. Believe in the truth.
